At Dentists R Us, we are not oblivious to the concerns surround fluoride in the alternative health sector. So we want to provide you with just the facts as they remain within the dental professional community.

Fluoride still remains an important factor in avoiding cavities. Regardless of if you are a child, teenager, adult or senior …topical fluoride is important in fighting decay, as well as strengthening developing teeth.

There is no need for tooth loss or decay as we age, and fluoride is one way in which to prevent this occurrence.

Fluoride can also be provided in more intensive supplements if needed, and there are ways in which to uncover if you are one of those adults who require such a supplement.

Firstly, are you gums receding noticeable, or has your dentist mentioned this concern to you? If so, take note, as periodontal disease could generate out of this concern.

As a preventative and restorative measure of sorts, your dentist can paint a fluoride varnish or gel on them, and you can use a fluoride mouthwash, or a prescription fluoride gel to receive more fluoride.

Secondly, are you on any medications that is causing your to have “dry mouth”, or have a disease with the same effect? It’s more common than you might think, but one that should be discussed with your dental professional.

Because saliva naturally helps neutralize sugars and acids in your mouth, the lack of saliva can be a concern in the opposite direction. Mouthwash containing fluoride can aid in the negative effects of a lack of saliva. So consider that as an option.

Other factors are filling, crowns and bridges, as well as dental braces …all these things can alter the saliva in your mouth; so again, a fluoride based mouthwash is a positive solution.

Apart from the aforementioned risks, fluoride should not be a foregone childhood memory. Rather, if you think you are at high-risk decay, ask your dentist about receiving fluoride treatments at your next dental visit.

We would be happy to help, and further explain the benefits this can provide you and your smile!
