Halloween can be a hoot of a time, but ending your evening fun with a toothache is far from ideal. So how can you enjoy Halloween without risking damage to you or your children’s teeth? Allow is to help you best do so with these Halloween Dental Health Tips!

Everything in Moderation
North America is one of the highest consumers of sugar in the world, and Halloween clearly adds a hefty dose of sugar to such statistics. So at DentistsRUs, we suggest the “everything in moderation” theory. The excitement of the day will likely be further “excited” by sugar, but once Halloween is over – agree with your kids on a piece or two of candy a day, or keep it to weekend consumption if possible.

Sugar – the Dehydration Effects
Sugar actually promotes dehydration, so ensure your child is drinking water to flush out the sugars and also keep them well hydrated.

In fact, your child’s Halloween treats can actually be a great motivator to increase their water consumption, and a little bribery of “1-3 treats per glass of water” could even add to your child’s health benefits if they are someone who doesn’t like to consume too much H2O. Every perceived “downfall” can act as a motivator, and Halloween candy could actually have them drinking more water in a day than perhaps they even do in a week!

Keep the Treat Temptation Out of Reach
Allowing your child to keep their treats in their room is a lot of pressure on a child as it pertains to expecting them to make the right decisions. So agree on a safe spot for your child’s candy, and place parameters on candy consumption days and times to prevent them from endlessly asking for their candy bag.

Display Healthy Choices
We can’t really expect our children to abide by rules we don’t implement for ourselves. So ensure you are displaying healthy choices – which could even involve handing out healthy alternatives to candy.

In addition, make sure teeth brushing routines are ramped up during high-sugar consumption times to guard against the increased risk of decay. This can be another added perk as a parent to really pull rank on requiring your kids to brush and floss if they are going to dine on their treats.

At DentistsRUs we’re all about fun, but we also want to ensure your children stay healthy during this Halloween candy-riddled season. We offer dental services across the Lower Mainland, so feel free to call or click on one of our many dentists below, and allow us to help ensure you and your family stay cavity free for many Halloweens to come!
