With spring break quickly approaching, having some healthy snacks on hand for the kids is important, as it will better ensure they are well sustained with energy that does not come with the ill-affects of a sugar high.

Although there are many pre-packaged snacks out there that boast of health benefits and vitamins, the fact is – if the first 3-5 ingredients include sugar, the health benefits will be minimal at best.

Providing your kids with healthy snacks will better ensure their oral health is at it’s best, and also that their overall health is maintained. Sugary treats will give kids a boost of energy, but it is quickly followed by very low energy, as well as the potential for mood swings and subsequent behaviours.

Consider snacks that are low in sugar and sodium such as…

  • Plain Popcorn
  • Greek Yoghurt
  • Cheese Sticks
  • Fresh Fruit Bites
  • Vegetable Sticks
  • Fruit-Filled Milkshakes
  • Whole Grain Bread Sticks with Hummus or Cream Cheese
  • Ants on a Log (peanut butter in celery sticks with raisins)

If you make healthy snack options appear fun and inviting, kids are more likely to eat them and benefit from their many health benefits, and not suffer from the sugar highs and lows of pre-packaged treats.
