With school nearly out and the holiday season upon us, schedules remain busy and scattered. Although the holidays tend to be about the kids, it is also the kids who are often found hopped up on sugar but limited in energy due to a lack of sleep.

From school concerts, to holiday parties, to Christmas shopping and a variety of things within that, we tend to become less aware of our diets, and the kids tend to eat on the fly.

However, a bustling lifestyle does not need to mean that nutrition or sleep has to falter. So as you map your way through the next couple of weeks with Christmas and New Years events plastered on your calendar, take into consideration some of these tips to help you keep your child’s nutrition on the right track.

Make a List, Check it Twice

If you’re grocery shopping on the run, often you will grab what is most convenient. Taking an extra 15 minutes to prepare your list, can also mean you can plan well-balanced meals for the week to come.

Leave the Cookies for Santa

Instead of snacking on the most convenient – and often sugar-riddled – snack, have some healthy snacks prepared ahead of time. Cut up carrot and celery sticks, put them in water and place them in the fridge …these are easy and healthy snacks to grab on the go.

Nuts and dried fruit are also in season, so keep those handy too.

Getting your kids involved is great way to help them make their own healthy food choices, so as busy as you might be – take a breath, slow down, and allow for those extra few minutes to truly enjoy the season and not just hurry through it.

Good Oral Health = Good Overall Health

Your overall health is closely linked to your oral health, so be sure not to let that slip over the holidays either. If you feel it is a costly measure you can’t afford for your children, look into the BC Healthy Kids Program.

What is the BC Healthy Kids Program?

Through the BC Healthy Kids Program, your children are eligible for $1400 of basic dental services every two years. This coverage includes services such as exams, x-rays, fillings, cleanings and extractions. Your dentist can advise you of other services that may be covered. Find out more HERE
