The term “sedation dentistry” is not familiar to everyone, so at DentistsRUs – we wanted to ensure our readers understood exactly what sedation dentistry is and how it can be of benefit to them!

Sedation Dentistry Explained
Sedation dentistry is a dental office added “treatment”, which offers patients medication that delivers a calm and relaxing atmosphere for them to undergo their dental procedure.

Also known as a “twilight sleep” it does not deliver the full effects of being asleep, but more so the relaxing effects or “nearly” being asleep, unless choosing to undergo full general anesthesia.

Various Levels of Sedation Include:
Mild Sedation – where you are under a mild sedation causing relaxation but still remaining wakeful.
Moderate Sedation – which is also a form of conscious sedation, but you are increasingly sedated, likely to slur your speech with little to no memory of the procedure itself.
Deep Sedation – where you are heavily sedated, but capable of being “woken up” as needed without much awareness whatsoever.
General Anesthesia – which puts your entirely in an unconscious state.
…all of which can be discussed with your dental professional as to which level you think would work best for you.

Who Usually Chooses Sedation Dentistry?
Although sedation dentistry may not be needed by a lot of individuals, those who choose it often include…

– Individuals with a low pain tolerance
– People who have issues sitting still for long periods of time
– Someone who has a heightened gag reflex
– Those who have highly sensitive teeth
